New Plus500 Brumbies recruit Murray Douglas met up with a Canberra old boy in the shape of Tom Staniforth this week to promote the pre-season trial clash between the Brumbies and the Waratahs in Goulburn early next year.
The old foes will lock horns at the Goulburn Worker’s Arena on Thursday 7 February and, with the Super Rugby competition set to begin just eight days later, the clash could have a significant impact on any momentum generated heading into the opening round.
Admission to the trial match will be free for both Plus500 Brumbies and Waratahs members. Brumbies and Waratahs members will just need to show their membership tickets at the gate to gain their complimentary admission to this fixture.
Murray Douglas is looking forward to the trial match against the Waratahs, playing in his position as lock or flanker. Murray says ‘’Before I got to the Brumbies I’ve heard that the Brumbies v Waratahs is one of the great rivalries in rugby and I can’t wait to be part of that.’’
Tom Staniforth commented on what can be expected from the game, ‘’We expect a very physical match for the Brumbies and Tahs, historically it’s always been a very good contest and some good running rugby which both teams will enjoy playing.
The Waratahs last provided pre-season opposition for the Brumbies in Mudgee in 2017 with the clubs playing out an enthralling match in front of a packed house at Glen Willow Regional Sports Stadium.
NSW Waratahs Head Coach, Daryl Gibson, said a trial match in a location like Goulburn that boasts both NSW Waratahs and Brumbies supporters, is sure to provide great atmosphere building into the start of the Super Rugby season.
“The NSW Waratahs and Brumbies share a great rivalry and we are looking forward to playing in a town where both sides have strong fan bases within the region,” said Gibson
“It’s a great opportunity for fans to see their side in the local region and that’s why members from both sides receive free entry into the match.
“For us, the trial will provide a good opportunity to put our pre-season work into action. As it’s our last trial both teams will be playing at Super Rugby match intensity,” he said.
The Brumbies begin their Super Rugby season on Friday 15 February 2019 with the Rebels the visitors to GIO Stadium in Canberra. Memberships for the season are on sale now with a range of options to suit all budgets. Visit www.brumbies.com.au/membership for more information.
