Two of our senior teams were back on deck this week – the men’s first and second grade teams – registering a win and a loss. Royals forfeited to our Women’s team so even though they didn’t get time on the paddock, it at least counted as a bonus point win. In the Juniors, matches went ahead and the club is looking to commemorate the 25th Anniversary of the Fizzy Reds.

Goulburn v Yass Under 10s – Friday 23 June
By EVAN DOUGALL
Fizzy 10s had a hard fought win over the Yass lambs on Friday night in testing conditions for both players and spectators.
With a wet and windy track and strong policing of the ruck by the referee, points were hard won.
Goulburn’s pace out wide proved the difference. Scoring included tries to Bailey Yeo and Austin Cosgrove, the next generation of the Yeo and Cosgrove families, and a strong carry and try for Toby Thrower to seal the win and player of the match.
It was great to see all the kids enjoying themselves in proper rugby conditions.
Thanks to Curly and the lambs for travelling and their sportsmanship. Special thanks to the referees for pulling the shorts on in conditions not far off arctic.
Commemorating 25 years of Fizzy Reds
To celebrate the 25th Season of the Fizzy Reds we have come up with a one-off Hoodie celebrating the occasion.
The Hoodie features Fizzy Reds EST 1998 – 2023 on the front and Club crest on the right sleeve on a FXD WF.1 bonded membrane fleece hoodie (which is wind-proof and water resistant) through our proud sponsor Worklocker.
Cost is $99 each. Orders and Payment can be made at the Canteen or with Robbie Cosgrove at Robbie.Cosgrove@hotmail.com by 7th July.

First grade: A tough match that featured a lot of patience, resilience and defence from Goulburn. Ordinarily you might expect a comfortable win against a Royals team that has only won one game this year, but when nearly half of the Royals side dropped down from higher grades because they’d received a forfeit, it wasn’t really the same last placed outfit Royals usually field. Points were at a premium with both sides defended very strongly, and it took 24 points for either side to get on the board. Royals were first and Goulburn followed six minutes later for a 5-7 half-0time deficit.
Taniela and Webber scored in the second half but Royals struck back with 11 to go and applied considerable pressure trailing 15-12. Goulburn’s composure and determination to hold out the strongly finishing Royals side was a great feature of the game and will help Goulburn in future tight situations. The stronger-than-usual Royals team also provided a tougher workout than Goulburn might otherwise have received which will help them in future rounds. Matt Spratley got 3 best and fairest points, while Mikael Webber and Alec Palmer shared Players’ Player.
Second grade: It was always going to be a tough assignment for the Dirty Twos to take on second-placed Royals, but they did a pretty good job overall in their 28-10 loss. In terms of territory, most of the match was fought out in the middle. Aside from that it flowed pretty freely and pretty evenly from end to end but the biggest difference was that Royals made better use of their chances, whereas Goulburn didn’t convert several promising scoring opportunities into points.
A key area for them to look at is sympathetic passing. A number of good chances were stymied by uncatchable passes. But that to one side, for most of the match the midfield exchanges were fairly even. Goulburn did a lot of the little things well and were in control for the last quarter of the match. The trick for them will to get their groove more quickly. Josh Condylios, who was everywhere in attack and defence, picked up both the Players’ Player award and three best and fairest points.
