Reds roll Uni-Norths

Goulburn’s charge for the semi finals is well and truly under way with resounding wins in both grades.

In blustery conditions that required goal-kickers to have someone hold the ball old-school style to prevent it getting blown away, Goulburn beat the Uni-North Owls by 47-5 in first grade and by 40-5 in reserve grade – the club’s best double this season.

As first grade looks to strengthen their position in the ACT first division top four, the convincing final result fell just three points shy of a club record against Uni-Norths, although the Reds took a while to get started.

Leading by 14-5 at the break following tries to Ben Todkill and Hamish McCormack, coach Ben Pearson drew comparisons to last week’s almost flawless assignment against Queanbeyan and pointed out the hot and cold nature of the start against Uni-Norths.

He asked his troops to lift and maintain the intensity and they responded with a much tighter second half that provided five more tries for Goulburn while denying Uni-Norths any further points.

One major negative from the match was a broken ankle to Grant Mooney who has been in outstanding form, adding to a recent spate of injuries across the club.

Brad Clements, who played his 100^th game for the club, picked up three best and fairest points and players player for an outstanding display. Two points went to Mik Webber who’d welcomed a new son into the world hours before the match, while Jordan Wilcox and Matt Spratley each picked up one best and fairest point despite having no personal anecdotes on the day.
