First loss for Barbarians

The Goulburn/Yass Barbarians recorded their first loss of the season, losing to Marist Blue by 24-0.

The match was the team’s first game in the top division. Before being regraded they had won their three matches so far by 89-0, 47-0 and 74-0 – 240 points for and zero against. Their promotion was inevitable and the jump in standard was substantial.

The Barbarians started strongly against Marist. They were within striking distance of the try line for most of the first half but were unable to translate position and possession into points due to Marist’s diligent defence.

In the second half the Barbarians redoubled their efforts but were still unable to breach Marist’s defence. Marist arrived in greater numbers at the breakdown, setting the platform for their tries which included a penalty try.

Despite the loss, the BarBars displayed great scrambling defence and ran down many one-off breaks for the line. And while a loss is never great, this match will give the boys a chance to focus on the areas they haven’t had to work on in their three previous matches and set them up well for the rest of the season.
