Recap
Powerful Gungahlin reserves topple Dirty Twos
By CHRIS GORDON
The Dirty Twos came up against a well drilled Gungahlin outfit, and finished on the back end of a 48-5 win by the Eagles.
Believe it or not, the Reds looked to be right in this match in the first half. Except for the scrum… Gungahlin’s scrum was like a Sherman tank that slipped into second gear and just eased inexorably forward despite whatever opposition it encountered.
But ASIDE from the scrum, the Reds looked to have a chance early on. Half-way through the first half they were only down by 12-5 and enterprising back play looked promising.
Chancing their hands out wide, the Reds started some good attacking plays and looked to have the measure of Gungahlin’s outside backs, but frequently poor handling brought these forays undone.
The Reds also harassed particularly well at the breakdown, frequently pilfering the ball.
But Gungahlin’s size and strength at the set pieces gave them a platform that carried into possession and field position and this proved unassailable.
Best and fairest players were Chris Boardman (3), Grant Mooney (2) and Josh Guymer (1). Boardman was also named players player.
Gungahlin 48 bt Goulburn 5 (Tynan Rae try).
