Recap
That’s a wrap for Dirty Twos
By CHRIS GORDON
The tenth placed Dirty Twos were outgunned against by the second placed Queanbeyan Whites when they went down by 59-7 on Saturday.
It’s a credit to the Whites that they have strength right down to their fourth grade side and they were never in doubt in this match.
One genuine highlight of the match was new reserve grade prop-pairing Ben “Bobby Brady” Todkill and Alec “Croc Hunter” Palmer. They lost no scrums against the feed and this may be a glimpse of their future direction.
It would be nice to have met Queanbeyan at Poidevin Oval once in the two matches this year (and just why we didn’t is yet another quirk of the competition), but it’s unlikely in the extreme that that would have changed the outcome. Too big, too strong, too good.
Having dished out due credit to Queanbeyan, the Dirty Twos deserve bucketloads of credit for the season they’ve just completed.
A few great wins and some near misses were recorded, but more than that the team, those that hung in there, kept coming back week after week well beyond their mathematical chances of making the semis had expired.
It’s easy to back up when you’re winning. It shows a lot of heart to keep plugging away when the results aren’t going your way.
Newer players grew in confidence throughout the year. More experienced campaigners did their bit to pass on their skills and attitudes.
It’s also a great credit to the club’s coaching staff, first grade coach Ben Pearson and second grade coaching debutante’s Abe Kara and Tim Moule, that regardless of how short-staffed reserve grade was on occasions, that they never let them, take the field without a full squad , no doubt to the detriment of first grade at times.
Well done Dirty Twos. Hope to see you back in the proudest jersey in country rugby next year.
Best and fairest players this time around were Nick Tabner (3), Jackson Reardon (2), Ben Cheetham (1) and Tynan Rae (1).
Queanbeyan 59 bt Goulburn 7 (Tynan Rae try, Brad Clements conversion).
