Goulburn U16s find their groove against Grammar
By TROY McNALLY
In what was an entertaining afternoon in Canberra the U16’s walked away with a 15-5 win over Canberra Grammar in an all-important clash.
Grammar came out strong on their home turf forcing Goulburn to their backline early. Despite a number of tough calls going against us, to our credit, our boys did well to hold Grammar out just five metres from the try line with some solid tackling and were able to turn the ball over allowing an exit kick over the halfway line to ease the pressure.
After some scrappy play Goulburn eventually found their rhythm and were first onto the scoreboard after Tom Harmer converted a penalty kick in front of goal, Goulburn led 3 – 0 at the close of the first half.
A reminder of pressure and intensity at half time, saw Goulburn take control from kick off in the second half, however tough calls again made it near impossible to move down field.
After some patient build-up play by Goulburn’s forwards our attack started to gain, allowing our boys in the backline to take the ball to Grammars line.
The boys looked sharp working together and soon paid off with more points on the board through a breakaway run by Brayden Crooks allowing the scoreboard to extend to 8 – 0. Shortly after, another breakaway run created an unreal passage of play to build pressure on Grammar.
From a scrum 10m out, Grammar scrambled for the ball in their own in-goal and this was finished off by James Seaman picking the ball up and placing it directly under the sticks. Conversion successful by Tom Harmer saw the score at 15 – 0.
In the dying minutes of the match Grammar managed to secure a try but the game was done. Goulburn walking away with a 15 – 5 win at the fulltime whistle. Next week we are back at home against Wests, looking for our first win in front of our home crowd.
