Strong finish for Goulburn U16s

Rain, wind and a wet field were the order of the day as Goulburn’s U16’s met Wests.

The pouring rain couldn’t damper the rugby spirit which was alive and well both on and off the field. It was a gutsy team effort by the boys right from kickoff.

Goulburn received the ball deep in their half, took the ball back to the Wests line with a few quick pick’n’drives, however the Wests defence held and soon they dominated field position.

Goulburn did well several times throughout the half holding their line which seemed impenetrable but with only a few minutes remaining before the half time whistle, Wests threw the ball wide and scored on the fringe in the corner followed by a successful conversion from the sideline, giving Wests the lead 7 – 0 going into halftime.

The team talk saw Goulburn being reminded again of utilising the simple plays in the wet conditions rather than passing the ball wide and risk losing possession.

The second half didn’t stray too far from the first half’s performance. A lapse of discipline saw Goulburn lose more possession through both the scrums and backline plays but to Goulburn’s credit, they held Wests out the entire half.

The wet conditions made it difficult for ball control and when the penny dropped, Goulburn found another gear and began to build momentum through more disciplined play.

With less than five minutes to go, Goulburn drove deep into Wests half which saw them scrambling to hold Goulburn out, but unfortunately the final whistle blew ending the game.

Wests 7 – Goulburn 0. Next weeks game is against Marist Royal in Canberra.
