Recap
By Pete Oliver (story & photos)
The Goulburn Dirty Reds Women have picked up where they left off last season, with a hard-fought 22-0 win over the Wests Lionesses.
Stepping up from their perfect season in the Development 10s competition last year, the Goulburn Women would be stepping up to the 15-a-side game and all the challenges that would bring.
Goulburn were under pressure early, and the Lionesses camped in the Reds’ half during the opening stages.
However, Goulburn absorbed the pressure and soon found themselves on the Wests line.
Brumbies prop Paige Penning had the honour of scoring the first try for the newly formed Women’s XV side, showing plenty of strength close to the line to barge her way over. Goulburn’s lead was soon extended when rampaging backrower Bella Sheen crossed the chalk.
Brumbies backrower Pearl Rakete notched her first try for 2020 with another strong effort to take Goulburn into the break ahead.
Soccer convert Amelia Vitek, on her rugby debut and looking like she’d been playing the sport for years, completed the hat trick of backrow tries for the Reds.
Vitek was rewarded for her impressive debut, picking up the Players’ Player award and three points in the best and fairest. Front rower Kelsey Betts picked up the two points, while lock Gillian Cudaj, hooker Dani McDonald and centre Chloe Waddell shared one point each.
The Reds Women will now go into a bye, with the side giving coaches Rob Sheekey and Ash Mewburn a solid foundation to build on.
Goulburn Dirty Reds Women 22 (Penning, Sheen, Rakete, Vitek tries, Waddell conversion) defeated Wests Lionesses 0.
