Recap
Dirty Twos pile on the points against Easts
By CHRIS GORDON
The Goulburn Dirty Twos compiled their biggest win of the season and the biggest win of the day with a stomping 55-5 defeat of Easts.
Goulburn clocked up nine tries in their performance, including a penalty try, one try that was almost butchered, and another no-try that was definitely butchered…or a little over-cooked.
The penalty try, about as common as wide-mouth frogs, was awarded barely minutes into the match after the ref had to march Easts numerous times for repeat infringements right up to the try line.
From there the match settled into a bit of a muddy arm wrestle, with Goulburn holding a slight edge in an otherwise balanced match. Easts put up a solid first half but only managed one try for their efforts with Goulburn going into the break 12-5 up.
But Goulburn lifted a notch or two in the second half and denied Easts any further points. With confidence and momentum on their side, Goulburn ran in seven second-half tries, including a pair to skipper Matt Spratley, to comfortably account for Easts.
The win, the team’s fourth from eight matches, displayed a lot of the cohesion missing in previous matches and keeps the side safely in the middle of the pack in a good position for a semi-finals run.
Best and fairest players were Connor Minehan (3), Matt Spratley (2), Hamish McCormack (1) and Kyi Fitzgibbon (1). Spratley was also named Players’ Player.
Next weekend, reserve grade has the weekend off, having already played their Round 8 fixture early in the season to accommodate ADFA.
Goulburn 55 (Matt Spratley 2, Josh Metz 1, Rhys Elliott 1, Eric Brown 1, Tynan Rae 1, Jack Burke 1, Josh Condylios 1, Michael Cooke 0 tries, one 7-point penalty try, Hamish McCormack 4 conversions) bt Easts 5.
