Strong final flourish secures win for Queanbeyan

Despite playing with a mostly fresh side and coming back energised after a last round home win, the Goulburn Dirty Reds firsts weren’t able to get in front of fellow cellar dwellers Queanbeyan, losing by 24-7.

It was a frustrating game as Goulburn never seemed to achieve any flow or cohesion. The now saturated ground, following four previous matches, made the job tougher as they used up a lot of petrol bogged down at the soggiest end, struggling to create exits. In all, the first half was a muddy arm wrestle with Queanbeyan having a converted try and a penalty goal to show for their efforts while all Goulburn had was a yellow card.

Twelve minutes into the second half, a try to Niki Naureure, converted by Brandon Courts, reduced the 10 point gap to just three and that tight gap stayed until midway through the second half. But finishing with a flourish, the Whites added tries in the 18th and 28th minute and one more right on the bell. Goulburn was still within striking range even after the second last try but couldn’t seem to put the pieces together.

With a condensed competition ladder, Goulburn is still very much a chance of making the four but any more losses to lower placed teams will make the task much tougher.

Next weekend the Goulburn men’s teams are away against Gungahlin at Nicholls Enclosed Oval while the women play Jindabyne at JJ Connors Oval.
