Recap

Dirty Reds dreadnought dominates again

By Chris Gordon

Despite playing a time reduced game, the Goulburn Dirty Reds women’s side demonstrated once again it’s dominance of the ACT Women’s 10s competition with  an 88-5 win over the Yass Ewes.

The Ewes arrived with the bare 10 players required, and as an assist, Goulburn provided several players to make a game of it.

But as the points grew, so did the Yass injury toll. The Reds ran in five tries in the first quarter, three in the second quarter with a significant portion lost to injury time, and six tries in the third quarter but along the way three Yass players had to leave the field with injuries.

The refereeing team met ahead of the scheduled fourth quarter and, understandably given the score and the injuries sustained by Yass, decided to call the game off early. Had they not, the Goulburn women were likely to pass the club’s all time scoring record – what would have been a nice accomplishment on the club’s Ladies Day – however the sizeable win was still something to celebrate.

The Goulburn Women’s side were very thankful for Yass coming to play with limited numbers instead of conceding a forfeit.

It was a great result for Goulburn although probably not a showcase of their form or control. Partly due to the stop-start nature of the match, and partly due to appreciating their opponents predicament, the Reds didn’t develop much flow or momentum in the early stages of the match and were just hitting their rhythm in the third quarter.

For all that, it was an expansive attacking display and a reminder of their skills across the paddock. The team remains almost certain candidates for the minor premiership, and to secure that title early, they’ll need to beat second placed Bungendore in a top of the table clash at Bungendore next weekend.
