Recap
Fifteens finish season with a flourish
By JASON MORONEY
Curly Joe Simmons crossing for a hat trick of tries was a highlight in a scrappy but nonetheless entertaining game of rugby between Goulburn and Marist. Joe may just have jagged the tag of ‘leading try scorer for the Club’, with 15 for the season.
Marist put up a great effort but we’re just outclassed today by a Goulburn team showing a few nerves but otherwise keen for a solid hit out before next week’s grand final.
In a nice touch, parents presented their sons with their jumpers today. The players were reminded of the support and love that sits behind them each and every day, and that has helped to make them the players and people they are today.
A special mention of Brendan O’Rourke, Noah Bartlett-Taylor, Toby Moller and Simon Leach who tackled everything in blue that moved.
The solid forward platform set up the backs, who, although a little bit ‘one out’, had plenty of ball and room to move. A good kicking game regularly turned Marist around.
Somewhat surprisingly, Pat Craig, received a penalty for dissent…the non-availability of suede leather furniture coverings due to the pandemic must have upset the big centre, but hopefully he stops the chirp next week.
So…onto a grand final next Saturday. After a season in which we were unsure would actually start, and then being accepted wholeheartedly by Goulburn rugby, the boys have a great chance to cap an unbeaten season with a GF win. St Edmunds won’t give away a grand final easily and the boys will need to work as a team to make it happen… but the hard work is nearly done…come Saturday it is up to the team to see how much they want it.
In another special touch, the boys presented Matty Tremble with a team jumper, thanking him for running water, tees and first aid each weekend.
Thanks to Bill for reffing, Marist for travelling, and to the many parents and friends who watched today. Special thanks to canteen volunteers also.
Goulburn 36 (Joe Simmons 3, Charlie Moroney 2, Pat Craig 1 tries, Charlie Moroney 3 conversions) bt Marist Sky 7.
